At the start of our new Science unit of work on the human circulatory system, Year 6 had the opportunity to experience a heart in a very different way. During this session, we actually got to touch and investigate the heart of a lamb.

For the first part of the lesson, we shared our previous knowledge on the heart and the circulatory system. We also discussed how we need to be respectful when handling the hearts as an animal lost their life so that we have this experience. We also discussed how a lamb’s heart is classed as food and how they were all ordered from a local supermarket. We even looked at the cooking instructions on the back of the packet.

The pupils worked in pairs, with a heart, to investigate how it felt and smelt. We also investigated the different parts of the heart such as the chambers that we had learnt about in a previous guided reading session.

During one of our reading sessions, we learnt about the Northern Lights. The children were fascinated with the vibrant colours they create, so we decided to use different coloured chalks to create our own Northern Lights artwork. This linked in to our previous art unit where we looked at shading.

During English, we have been learning about a poem called ‘The Visitor’ by Ian Serraillier. Over the week we studied the different vocabulary in the poem, and then tried to sequence it without actually seeing it based on our predictions. Towards the end of the week, the children learnt the poem and then performed it to the rest of the class.

During our Computing lessons, we have been using Code Monkey to input and debug code. The aim of the game is to work through increasing levels of difficulty by inputting code to enable the monkey to get his banana. If the monkey did not reach the banana, the children had to debug the code to correct it.

Year 6 visited St. John’s Church in Shildon to take part in an interactive Life Exhibition. This was a multi-media experience where pupils used iPads to learn about the life of Jesus. They also learnt about the story of ‘The Good Samaritan’.

Pupils visited four different interactive tents led by four different adults and at the end, the pupils took part in an interactive quiz to show what they had learnt.

Thank you St. John’s for this great learning experience.

Computing

CRC Article 29 – All children have the right to develop their personalities, talents and abilities to the full.

We studied what a network was and how our computer network in school worked.  We created network maps in groups to show this and examined the different wired and wireless connections.

We have continued to enhance our coding skills, this time using CODE.org and their Minecraft simulations.  We learnt how to use loops to simplify and streamline our code blocks and avoid repetition.

Science

CRC Article 28 – All children have the right to learn.

Classification – we have been learning about how animals and plants are grouped and their different features.  We learnt how to use and create keys to help identify or sort living things.  We have also studied micro-organisms and tested the conditions that were best for growing mould on bread.

RE

The Easter Story: We have learnt about the Easter Story and have tried to consider the key events from different people’s perspectives.  The photographs show us having a class debate about whether Jesus deserved to be crucified or not.

CRC Article 14 – All children have the right to their own thoughts, opinions and religion, but this should not stop other people from enjoying their rights. Parents can guide children so that as they grow up, they learn to properly use this right.

We have also visited the ‘Life Exhibition’ at St John’s Church, which was all about Jesus’s life and death.

Our Learning in Year 6 (2022-2023)

Unit of Light

To start our new unit of ‘Light’, Mrs. Thompson from Bishop Barrington came in to teach us. She put us into groups and we had the opportunity to complete a whole range of fun activities from trying to bend light, write secret messages and looking at them in U.V light to mixing colours to create white light. Once we had all had a go at each activity, Mrs. Thompson then taught us the theory behind each one. We are going to use this knowledge during the rest of the unit. Year 6 Geography

As part of our first Geography lesson on Rainforest and Forests, the children were given six photographs and 6 definitions. They had to work in pairs to discuss the definitions and match them up with the photographs. As we delve deeper into forests, the children will be studying the Amazon Rainforest and forests in the United Kingdom.
